Anti-Racist Parenting

Racism is not just the problem of the Global Majority, it's something for everyone to work on and unpick so that collectively we make the world a safer place for all children. What a child learns at home lays the foundations for their world view and moral compass which cannot be underestimated or ignored.

No matter where you are on your anti-racist journey you are, as a parent or guardian it's essential to do the work to explore your biases and assess how you contribute to upholding white dominance.

Children start to notice the difference in the ethnicities of faces as young as three months old, identifying what their carers look like and who doesn't look like them. From two years old children can show bias towards others who look like them. Playmates can be chosen at this early stage depending on what ethnicities the child has been exposed to.

Many parent, guardians and carers worry about saying the wrong thing or inducing racism through talking about it. The worst thing we can be doing is not talking about race and ethnicity. It's essential to firstly identify and address our own prejudices and work to unlearn and relearn. Then you're best placed to build an environment for your children where social equity and  racial advocacy is the norm. Cultural capital and competency are amongst the greatest gifts you can bestow upon your children.

Our courses provided practical suggestions and interactive exercises aimed at truly understanding the impact of anti-racist parenting.
